Consistent donation revenue is crucial to long-term financial stability. You can remove barriers for loyal supporters by offering the ability to contribute on an ongoing basis at a level that suits them. A single, variable membership replaces the need to manage multiple, fixed-price donation levels, thereby reducing ongoing administrative work. This recipe will show you how to utilise auto-renewable Membership functionality to create a recurring variable giving scheme.


What you need

  • Access to the admin interface in Spektrix
  • A fund to link your donations to
  • An understanding of your organisation’s your Gift Aid/tax requirements 
  • A live subsite OR a way to display recurring donations on your website

  • Reduce administrative overheads by using one membership to manage all regular giving instead of many levels for fixed small amounts


Concepts we’ll be using

  • Memberships: Used to facilitate the recurring aspect of the donation.
  • Funds: Each Fund can represent a different reason why you are raising or asking for money. You can think of funds as pots of money into which donations are channelled. 
  • Spektrix Subsites (or other web integration options): to host your variable giving online.


Prep

  1. In the admin interface, create a fund for recurring donations.
  1. Create a membership attribute called MembershipType with the values of Recurring and Annual. Make this visible in your API integrations and always required.
  1. Decide on the price range you want to make available as a recurring donation.
  1. Prepare a short impact statement explaining the impact of your donation (eg. £50 pays for X). This can be displayed alongside the membership online.
  1. Ensure your payment gateway is set up for automatic billing. If you use Spektrix Payments this is already available to you.


Activate

  1. Create a new membership called "Make a Monthly Donation" that auto-renews on a monthly basis. 
  1. Set the benefit amount to zero to make the price 100% donation.
  1. Make the membership variable with broad min & max value to appeal to a wide audience. This will contribute to expanding your supporter base and therefore, your donated revenue. 
  1. Make your new membership available online with an engaging impact statement to resonate with your audience.
  1. Get your automated recurring giving scheme on your website by configuring the web element by either:
  • Using a live Subsite, add a new page for MEMBERSHIPS_COMPONENT (beta). Use ?attribute_MembershipType=Recurring to filter results using your membership attribute.
